Students will learn how to write and draw graphic novels. The course will teach the written and artistic techniques used to tell a story with sequential images. Students will learn script writing, plot and character development, penciling, inking, lettering and how to publish their work. Students will draw a short graphic novel during the course and will be encouraged to use their own experiences and artistic styles to develop their stories.

PAINTING : LADY IN WHITE | INTRO/INTER
Painting the female form in diaphanous summer white dress, inspired by Lady in White paintings by Singer Sargent and Whistler, you will model form in paint observing the life model. WATERCOLOUR PAINTING | INTRO
Learn the process of creating watercolour through demonstrations and one-on-one instruction. A minimal palette and mixing colors will be emphasized with individual instruction according to students’ needs. PLEIN AIR PAINTING | INTER/ADV
This course is geared for artists with a love of painting nature, and would like to take that love outdoors. We will be going to Petrie Island where there are multiple painting options. The view(s) will be discussed, quick sketches (thumbnails) and value sketches will be worked out, and the best possible composition will be decided upon. Once we have chosen the best option, suggestions for use of colour etc. will follow, and then on to happy painting. Not recommended for the beginning artist.

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP
The students are introduced to Photoshop: the high-end software for digital imaging and the latest tool added to the artist’s kit. Photoshop is essential for printed media, the Internet, video and 3D productions. Students will explore Photoshop’s basic concepts, tools, pallets and more. During this course, the students will create their own portfolio that they will present in class.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTOSHOP | INTRO/INTER
Learn to get the most out of your digital camera and to correct and manipulate digital images using Adobe Photoshop. Establish a transitional workflow between traditional and digital photography. Covering all-important aspects of the medium, sessions are step by step examinations through the technical notions of the computer darkroom, guided for participants to understand the creative use of digital tools and work with the rich possibilities that the medium has to offer.

FILM TO DIGITAL | INTRO/INTER
If you have a film or digital camera, this course will introduce the range of choices seasoned professionals make to improve their photographs. By looking and taking photographs, students will appreciate how the quality of light and the compositional elements are essential components to elevate one’s work from a snapshot to a work of art. There will be a range of subject matters - including day and night landscape photography, photographing people on the street and in the studio - which are part of specific assignments that will challenge students’ abilities.

COMBINED STUDIO ART WITH INTRODUCTION OF RECENT ART PRACTICE | INTRO

FINE CRAFTS
ART QUILT: CLOTH, COLOUR AND COMPOSITION | INTRO
Explore the possibilities of the non-traditional “quilt” as an expressive art medium through this process-oriented, sewing machine based workshop. Students begin the week by compiling a series of small samples of colour and elements of design studies to use as a springboard for developing their own personal style. Samples can be employed as a reference for future work or used as the starting point for art quilts that will be designed and constructed in class the second part of the week.

PRECIOUS METAL CLAY | INTRO
Learn how to make your own jewellery using this amazing clay-like material. When it’s fired it turns into pure silver before your eyes! In this three-hour basic class students will make their own pendant or pendants (depending on the design and size of your pieces). The participants will learn basic techniques in rolling, stamping, carving and finishing Precious Metal Clay. Class projects include 1-3 pendants depending on size. All materials included.

Summer Camps for Children Ages 6 to 12
Mixed media classes, and classes with a media focus, are offered for children aged 6 - 12. Students produce a wide variety of work in many disciplines: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, cartooning and sculpture, including clay. These classes give students the opportunity to explore materials and processes that are not available in the home or school setting. Classes are taught by artist/educators who provide children with an environment that encourages individual creative growth. Most courses are organized around a theme and include a tour of the collection at the National Gallery of Canada.
Summer Camps for Teens Ages 12 to 16
The Ottawa School of Art also offers classes for older children between 13 and 15 years. These classes are media specific or have a narrow thematic focus. They encourage students to develop focus and skills in specific techniques and increase their knowledge of various elements of art. The fun comes from being immersed in art: in playing hard all week.
